Character Information
Character Name: Sealand (Peter Kirkland)
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Character History: Built in 1943 during WWII by the United Kingdom (under the name HM Fort Roughs), lying six miles (10km) off the coast of Suffolk, England in the North Sea, Sealand was primarily used for defense against the German Luftwaffe. It wasn’t until 1956 that the last of all Naval personnel were taken off the base.
The fort was unoccupied until September 2nd, 1967 when Roy Bates (who Hetalia’s Sealand mentions being called “Super Larry”) arrived with his family. A year later, when Britain claimed the fort was in territorial waters, it was ruled by the court that this was in fact false and that Sealand (which Bates had called the fort) was out of British jurisdiction. Years later, Bates created a constitution for Sealand; along with a flag, national anthem, currency, and even passports. Yet despite all this, Sealand has not been officially recognized as a nation and is classified as a micronation instead. It is to be said however, that Sealand is described as the world’s smallest nation, despite actually being a sovereign state.
Hetalia’s Sealand lives on his namesake base by himself . Hetalia also alludes to the fact that he’s not a country as he’s ignored by several others at world meetings, which he’s not even supposed to attend because of this.
Going further into the nation’s history, in 2007 Sweden attempted to buy the base, the deal fell through however. Contrary to this fact, Hetalia’s Sealand is said to have been adopted by Sweden, in which he refers to him as his father with Finland being his adoptive mother respectively. These ideas are accepted generally as fanon though canonically his only relationship relative wise is with England, who created Sealand (and then abandoned him).
Hetalia’s Sealand also mentions that one can apply to for a noble title of Sealand, which in recent years, the real Sealand has been selling these titles. However, these titles are not recognized by international law.
Character Personality: Sealand is a very energetic and determined young boy, which may make him come off as reckless to some. He’s ambitious and wants nothing more than to be recognized as a country, and to be bigger and stronger than his older brother England, who he seems to hold somewhat of a grudge with for abandoning him in the middle of the ocean. While he does resent this action, he doesn’t harbor any true hatred for the other nation. But he has such high hopes that he’s willing to do just about anything if he knows it’ll get him any closer to his dream.
Sealand also appears to be a rather naïve child as he believes that his big heart and aforementioned determined demeanor will make up for him being so small and help him to become a recognized nation. This may or may not be good things per se as he’s persistent in not letting general concern from other nations get in the way of his goal. Given his persistent and sometimes even boisterous nature, he has the tendency to come off as overbearing and annoying (or intimidating in some cases) to other countries he comes across as well. He doesn’t like to take no for an answer either and often tries to sneak into world meetings even though he’s not allowed to attend them, sometimes going as far as impersonating other countries to get in unnoticed. These plans, however, never worked as he is then escorted out of the room against his will.
At the same time he prefers his independence and would rather not have the help of anyone else when carrying out tasks. He has to be though since he lives by himself a majority of the time. This is a mindset many children his age have as well, but in the case of a young micronation such as himself, if the others can see how well he can carry himself then they’ll just have to accept him as a country too. (Yet, even the biggest and strongest countries need a little help every once in awhile.)
Aside from that, he’s a very kind hearted boy who cares a lot about those countries that actually do interact with him. Namely his adoptive parents Sweden and Finland as well as his friend Latvia, with whom he’s close with seeing as how they’re both small nations who get very little respect (the only difference between the two is the fact that Latvia’s actually a country though). He enjoys making new friends with the other nations as well, especially the other micronations. But when it comes to becoming a country, he still has a lot to learn.
Powers and Abilities: Sealand claims he can shoot a super powerful rocket punch (he really can’t).

Network: Where…where am I? Ah! And where is everyone else?!
[He scans the area around him for any signs of is loved ones trying to keep his composure]
Helloooooo! Anybody? [He huffs, slumping to the ground and pouting]
Come on guys, this isn’t funny okay! You can all come out now…guys?
…
This is all so strange though. All I remember is going to bed and then suddenly..I’m here! Wherever here is. Such an odd place though. M-maybe I’m just dreaming. Yeah! That’s it! This is all just a very silly dream and when I wake up, everything will be just as it was yesterday. Haha!
And here I was, about to get so worked up over a dream. [Sealand picks himself back up and brushes off his clothes]
I bet everyone is just waiting for me someplace else. I really shouldn’t keep them waiting then!
[And then he ran off.]
Third Person: The young boy runs frantically through the city, buildings became nothing but a blur as they seemed to mesh with each other as Sealand’s speed seemed to increase with every few feet. He had no clue of where he was going, all he could concentrate on was trying to find somebody, somebody he might know. At this point however, anybody would probably be better than nobody at all, he just needed to know he wasn’t all alone in this. He should be used to being alone after having lived in the middle of the ocean for years, however, after being adopted and having a family that loved him and friends to play with, the thought of not having any of that anymore seemed to bother him more than he wanted to admit. Burning tears crept to the edges of his eyes but he tried to fight them back. He was stronger than this; he was going to be a country one day and to him letting anyone see him cry only proved that he wasn’t ready for taking on such a big responsibility. “I can’t let anyone see me like this, not now anyway.” He thought, furiously rubbing his face, which only made it more evident of his fear and sadness.
Millions of questions raced through the micronation’s mind, but the questions sitting on the forefront of his mind were “where am I?” followed by “where is everyone?”.
He kept running, turning and twisting around every bend and corner he could find. He could feel himself getting weaker but he tried to keep himself going, he couldn’t stop now; not before he found someone to help him. “You can do this Sealand, you have to stay strong” he thought to himself, panting heavily. Sealand tried to push ahead just a few more miles, but fatigue was catching up to him quicker than he wanted as his panting turned to deep gasps, lungs burning, and sweat beginning to pearl above his thick eyebrows,. He came to a sluggish halt in what he assumed was the middle of the city, feeling as if he had failed everyone in some way. He fells to his knees in defeat trying desperately to get back up, but it was no use.
“I’ll just..catch my breath for a moment and then be on my way. Yeah, that’s it.” he thought to himself. But in the meantime he decided he should try and scan his surroundings for a bit and see if he couldn’t try and find anyone within the area and maybe gather his thoughts together. He could barely see a few feet in front of his face though. “This place…why was I brought here?” the boy asked, still gasping. “If..anyone is out there..show yourself!” He called out. No answer.
“Maybe I really am alone again..ah! Get it together!” Sealand thought to himself, fresh tears beginning to creep out from the corners of his eyes.
“No! I can’t let that bother me now! I just..I just have to keep moving.” Regaining his strength he stands back up, “Now’s not the time be sad. I have to find my way out of this place and if I have to do it alone, then I guess I’ll just have to do it alone!” He smiles a little, standing now confident, “Whatever this place has in store for me, I mustn’t keep it waiting. Look out world, here comes Sealand!”
The boy charges off with new found confidence into the darkness.
